'Stay off the roads' | Mayor Whitmire, city leaders urge Houstonians to stay safe as hard freeze approaches

Meteorologist Pat Cavlin said the worst times to be on the roads will likely be Monday night into Tuesday morning.

HOUSTON — "Stay off the roads," is the message several Houston leaders reiterated Monday afternoon as a wintry mix shut down several bridges and roads.

As of 6 p.m. Monday, there were more than four dozen road closures across the Houston area due to ice. More are expected as temperatures drop overnight and a hard freeze approaches. See list of road closures due to ice.

"Even though we have treated, our partners at TxDOT have pretreated and treated and retreated," said an official with Houston Public Works. "There are many overpasses, many bridges that will be closed and are just unsafe."

Houston Public Works said it's best to avoid driving, if possible, as long as temperatures are below freezing.

Meteorologist Pat Cavlin said the worst times to be on the roads will likely be Monday night into Tuesday morning.

If you must leave your home, city officials suggest you use the service roads and take your time.

Many school districts have decided to close on Tuesday, including Houston, Fort Bend, Katy and Aldine ISDs. See the full list of closures here
