List of Houston-area businesses, services, local government offices closed on Tuesday due to hard freeze

Some businesses in the Houston area will be closed on Tuesday due to the extreme weather.

HOUSTON — We're expecting a hard freeze Tuesday with temperatures plunging into the 20s and teens. The wind chill or "feels like temperatures" will dip into the teens or below across Southeast Texas.

  • There is a Hard Freeze Warning in effect until 9 a.m. Wednesday for all Southeast Texas.

Some businesses in the Houston area will be closed on Tuesday due to the extreme weather. You can find a separate list of school closures here.

Houston-area closings Tuesday

BakerRipley Community Centers and BakerRipley Senior Health and Wellness Centers: Closed Tuesday; will resume normal operations Wednesday

BARC Houston: The shelter will be closed to the public Tuesday but staff will be on site to care for the animals.

Fort Bend County offices, courts, and facilities closed Tuesday; no court dockets or jury duty;  

Essential services and staff, including law enforcement, emergency management services, the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, and other necessary departments, will remain operational for safety precautions. 

Galveston/Bolivar Ferry: TxDOT advised that ferry operations from Galveston to the Bolivar Peninsula will cease at 10 p.m. Monday and will only be utilized during an active emergency.

HCAD: The Harris Central Appraisal District will be closed Tuesday, January 16 because of the arctic cold front creating hazardous driving conditions. Hearings scheduled for Tuesday will be rescheduled.

Harris County courts: Dockets, and jury duty were canceled Tuesday

Harris County Clerk's Office:  All Harris County Clerk’s Office locations will be closed on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, as a precaution to the inclement weather affecting our area. HCCO said it will reopen at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Harris County Tax Office: All locations will be closed, on Tuesday, January 16, due to deteriorating weather conditions. The tax offices will reopen Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Harris County Judge's Office: Harris County closes all departments on Tuesday unless they are supporting essential operations. Jury service has also been canceled.

Harris Health: Due to the severe winter weather throughout greater Houston and the closure of major school districts, Harris Health is closing all of its outpatient health centers and clinics, the Ambulatory Surgical Center at LBJ Hospital and administrative offices at Fournace Place in Bellaire for Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024.

However, the Harris Health Dialysis Center at Quentin Mease will open with a delayed start of 7 a.m.

All patients who have appointments will be contacted to reschedule.

Harris Health expects to resume regular clinic and administrative schedules on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2024.

HCTRA: The Harris County Toll Road Authority will resume regular business hours for the EZ TAG stores, call centers and administrative offices tomorrow January 17,but won't open until 9 a.m. 

Houston Municipal Courts: Closed Tuesday;  no trials, arraignments, or jury duty

Houston Botanic Garden: Closed Tuesday

Houston Zoo: Due to deteriorating weather conditions, the Houston Zoo will close early Monday at 1 p.m. and will remain closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16. All non-member ticket holders may reschedule their visit. 

Every animal at the zoo has a care team dedicated to knowing what preparations each species needs to ensure they are comfortable during cold weather conditions. All animal buildings at the Houston Zoo are built to withstand extreme weather.

Legacy Community Health clinics: All but the Southwest clinic at 6441 High Star and the Legacy Pharmacy at 1415 California St. closed at 3 p.m. on Monday. 

School-based health locations will follow the schedules of Houston ISD and Galena Park ISD on Tuesday.

Legacy will determine potential late openings and closures across all locations and regions for Tuesday, January 16later this evening.

METRO: Bus and METRORapid services were suspended Monday night. Passengers needing assistance can call or text Customer Service at 713-635-4000 to request a ride until 11 p.m. tonight. 

METRORail will continue to operate its regular service. METROLift riders with scheduled trips will not be affected.

  • METRORail will operate service at a reduced frequency on all lines.
  • METROLift will operate only medically necessary trips.

Space Center Houston: Space Center Houston, the official visitor’s center of NASA Johnson Space Center, will be closed to the public, tomorrow, January 16, 2024, due to the impending inclement weather, the center said.
