Colorado State scientists to release outlook for 2024 Atlantic hurricane season Thursday morning

KHOU 11's David Paul spoke with Dr. Phil Klotzbach, the lead hurricane scientist behind the CSU forecast.

HOUSTON — On Thursday, the scientists from Colorado State University will be releasing their 2024 Atlantic hurricane season forecast.

It’ll be our first chance to see what science is showing us could happen this hurricane season.

At the National Hurricane Conference last week in Orlando, Florida, our chief meteorologist, David Paul, talked with the lead hurricane scientist from Colorado State University.

Dr. Phil Klotzbach talked about the likelihood of a La Niña pattern, which has been known to help fuel more storms in a season. He also discussed the sea surface temps in the Atlantic and why those are so critical to forecasting what might happen this hurricane season.

“It hasn't cooled as much as we would've liked it to have seen it cool,” Klotzbach said. “It's still quite warm out there. We're still record warm in most of the tropical Atlantic right now. Overall that combination of La Niña and a very warm Atlantic typically leads to very active hurricane seasons."

The season’s forecast will be announced in a news conference Thursday at 9 a.m. KHOU 11 will stream it live on KHOU.com and our mobile news app.
