Uvalde school shooting survivors call for termination of responding officers

Families, including some of the children who were in the classroom with the gunman, are demanding change.

UVALDE, Texas — On Monday, the families of those affected by the Robb Elementary School shooting flooded the Uvalde County Commissioners Court.

Among those who were there -- some of the children who were in the classroom with the gunman, holding signs.

  • Khloie Torres called 911 twice while she was trapped inside the classroom.
  • Kendall Olivarez was shot in the shoulder and her back.
  • Miah Cerrillo was the young girl who smeared blood on herself and pretended to be dead. She also grabbed her teacher’s phone to call 911.
  • AJ Martinez was shot in the leg.

Before this week, families would attend the meetings demanding resignation but with no real documents to back up their demands. Now, with the recent report released by the Department of Justice, the families have the names of the local officers who failed them.

They are requesting the resignation of Mariano Pargas, a county commissioner who at the time of the shooting was acting as the interim police chief, Uvalde County Sheriff Ruben Nolasco, constable Emmanuel Zamora and Johnny John Fields, a constable and the man who oversees the law enforcement academy.

All were at the school within minutes of the shooting.

The families said they'll continue to fight and continue to ask for those who failed them to be terminated.

On Tuesday, they will attend the Uvalde City Council meeting.
