Derion Vence's attorney files motion to withdraw as counsel

Thomas H. Burton III filed the motion Wednesday, citing Vence and his family have not paid him and failed to “comply with terms of the employment.”

HOUSTON — The attorney for Derion Vence, Maleah Davis’ stepfather, has filed a motion to withdraw his services as counsel.

Thomas H. Burton III filed the motion Wednesday, citing Vence and his family have not paid him and failed to “comply with terms of the employment.”

Vence is charged with tampering with a human corpse in connection to the 4-year-old’s disappearance. He remains in the Harris County Jail.

Maleah has been missing since April 30 and was last seen with Vence.

Community activist Quannel X on Tuesday told KHOU 11 he is no longer representing Brittany Bowens, Maleah’s mother. Quannel said he stopped working with Bowens because he believes she was not being truthful about the case.

Investigators said they do not believe Maleah is alive, but they're still trying to find her body.
