Community comes together for local law enforcement officers after Monday's shooting

Community members and businesses are coming together to help the five officers injured in a deadly shootout in southeast Houston on Monday.

HOUSTON — Community members are coming together to show support for the five Houston Police officers injured in Monday's shooting and for all other officers.

Republic BBQ, located inside Redneck Country Club, is offering local law enforcement officers and up to three guests to eat free this Saturday during their grand opening weekend.

The offer is extended to all law enforcement departments, local, state and federal. Officers do not need to be in uniform, they will only be asked to show their badge.

Hurts Donut in Katy are selling "Thin Blue Line" donuts Wednesday and Thursday to raise money for the five officers injured in the shooting.

The donuts will be sold for $3 a piece and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the officers, the restaurant said.

"We stand together in Houston, and together we will help each other through this. Thank a police officer today. #thinblueline" the restaurant said on Facebook.

Local nonprofit, Assist The Officer, has created a fund to raise money for the injured officers. The public can donate via PayPal here and the money will go directly to the officers, according to the organization.

The organization says it provides "short-term, immediate need assistance for officers critically injured or disabled in the line of duty."

The Texas Gulf Coast Blood Center also stepped in to help the officers by providing blood to hospitals that are treating the officers.

In the wake of the shooting, Kenny & Ziggy’s is also offering a helping hand by picking up the tab for local police officers.

Any uniformed HPD officers can dine free on Tuesday, January 29, at the Post Oak and Buffalo Speedway locations. The restaurant says the move is to show its concern and appreciation to all officers of the Houston Police Department.

“We just want to protect them and serve them for a change and say 'thank you.' They really lay their lives on the line for us, and they deserve our gratitude," said Ziggy Gruber Owner of Kenny and Ziggy’s New York Delicatessen.

“I want the police officers to know that average people like me and my employees, are so grateful to them and care about them because we know they care about us, and we just want to say thank you," he said on Tuesday
