Houston SPCA rescues 44 chihuahuas from property in Weimar

SPCA said that most of the dogs were being held in makeshift outdoor housing covered in urine and feces with no access to fresh water.

The Houston SPCA rescued 44 chihuahuas from "deplorable conditions" at a property in Colorado County Wednesday after getting a request for help from the Weimar Police Department.

SPCA said that most of the dogs were being held in makeshift outdoor housing covered in urine and feces with no access to fresh water. They said authorities found more dogs hiding in an abandoned trailer that was filled with debris and feces.

The dogs were taken to the nonprofit back in Houston where they started individualized treatment plans.

The custody of the pets is set to be determined during a court hearing next week.

SPCA said they got the request from WPD as police were serving a civil seizure warrant on the property.

The organization warns that animal cruelty in Texas is punishable by up to two years in prison and a $10,000 fine. You can report animal cruelty by calling Houston SPCA's investigations team at 713-869-7722 or online.
