BRENHAM, Texas - The city of Brenham is mourning the loss of a young man who died while helping the community.

Jarrett Halfmann, 16, was clearing debris Monday morning when Brenham police say a tree limb collapsed on him. Halfmann later died from his injuries.

"It was Memorial Day. It's a day in which we honor those who have given their life to our country," said Stephen Puckett, a teacher at Brenham High School. "Jarret was actually helping church members."

Jarrett Halfmann's funeral was held today at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brenham.

"It's with broken hearts that we honor him today," said Allison Crowson, the assistant principal at Brenham High School.

Crowson said hundreds of people came to Halfmann's visitation Wednesday night.

"Jarrett was a remarkable young gentleman, very responsible, very mature," said Amy Jasinski, a teacher at Brenham High School.

Jarrett Halfmann's mother is a teacher at the high school.

"I saw him as a young kid running through the hallways to his moms class," says Lanny Williams, Halfmann's former coach and teacher.

Brenham High School plans to honor Halfmann later this year.
