National Preparedness Month: Tips for staying safe during a Tornado Warning

"Get to that interior room of your house - for a lot of people it's a bathroom or closet - it's a windowless room away from the outside," one expert said.

LEAGUE CITY, Texas — September is National Preparedness Month and we want to make sure you're ready in case disaster strikes.

The best time to get prepared is before anything gets here. KHOU 11's Chita Craft said that while tornados are rare in the Greater Houston area, they are still possible and people should still be ready to respond to them.

Chita sat down with Dan Reilly, a warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in League City, to find out what you can do when a Tornado Warning is issued in your area.

"Get to that interior room of your house - for a lot of people it's a bathroom or closet - it's a windowless room away from the outside. You want to do that right away," Reilly said. "One thing you might not know if you are out and about - you want to get inside. The bridge or overpass a lot of people think you can get under, that is not a safe place to be. So, best advice - get to that shelter."

Make sure you download the KHOU 11 app on the Apple App Store or on the Google Play Store to receive severe weather alerts whenever they hit our area.
