School closures: Due to severe weather damage in Houston area, these districts will be closed

Severe weather caused widespread damage in the Houston area, forcing the state's largest and third-largest school district to close.

Severe weather caused widespread damage and power outages across the Houston area on Thursday, forcing the state's largest and third-largest school districts to close.

At least four people were killed during the storm, according to Mayor John Whitmire, and he urged everyone to stay off the roads and stay safe. 

Districts closed on Friday

Aldine ISD closed Friday

Alief ISD is closed Friday

Beatrice Mayes Institute Charter School is closed Friday.

Brazos School for Inquiry & Creativity- Tidwell Campus  is closed Friday

Channelview ISD said its campuses would be closed Friday.

Cleveland ISD said it would be closed Friday due to power outage.

Conroe ISD is open today, Friday, May 17. Due to continued power outages in select areas, only Patterson Elementary, Bozman Intermediate, and Stockton Junior High School will be closed. We expect all Conroe ISD campuses to be open for school on Monday, May 20.

Cy-Fair ISD also said its campuses would be closed Friday, May 17, 2024, and would reopen Monday, May 20, 2024. District officials said the day would not need to be made up later in the year due to the inclement weather minutes built into the CFISD school calendar.

Houston Community College closed Friday

Houston ISD said all campuses would be closed Friday, May 17, 2024, and would reopen Monday, May 20, 2024.

Storm damage

There were uprooted trees and downed power lines across the city. As of 9 p.m. Thursday, CenterPoint reported nearly 900,000 customers without power. Throughout the afternoon and into the evening Thursday, strong storms set off a slew of tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings across the Houston area.

Katy ISD's Paetow High School also delayed its graduation ceremony. It was originally scheduled to happen Thursday night but the district moved it to Friday.

At about 9 p.m. Thursday, Katy ISD said it hadn't decided whether or not classes would be held on Friday. The district said it would send out a notification with an update.
