HOUSTON — Tropics remain active as we approach the peak of hurricane season. Statistically, that is September 10 and the Atlantic basin is reflecting that.
As of Friday morning, Hurricane Lee is a Category 5 storm with maximum sustained winds at 165 miles per hour, moving to the west-northwest near 14 miles per hour. This motion is expected to continue through early next week as the storm passes through the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
Upper-level steering currents should take ahold of Hurricane Lee and deflect much of the energy away from the US. High pressure has clockwise flow and that should keep Lee in the Atlantic but we will watch closely through the weekend.
