Thanksgiving travel already taking flight

TSA is sending out tips, saying arrive two hours early, wear slip-on shoes and pack smart.

HOUSTON — Many Houstonians are getting an early start on one of the busiest travel times of the year.

Thanksgiving is still days away, but so many are already taking flight, and airport security is getting strict.

Houston Hobby Airport, for some, it's the happiest place on earth, and for others, not so much.

“Organization, planning, try not to get stressed out. Staying calm and collected is best, especially with children," Linsey Morgan said.

But happiness isn't far off for the Morgan family. A few hours to Boston, and they’re there.

But first, the flight. Four kids, seven checked bags, two car seats later and they’re off.

“It’s the holidays. Put a smile on your face, be friendly. We’re all stressed out," Morgan said.

With the holidays here, airport security is ramping up.

Houston Police are pulling out their AR-15s for the season, saying they do this every year, calling it "high visibility" so travelers know they’re on guard.

TSA is also sending out its tips, saying arrive two hours early, wear slip-on shoes and pack smart.

And a little Thanksgiving fun: telling travelers the turkey, pies and casseroles go in your carry on, but the gravy, cranberry sauce and jam all need to be checked.

Just another tool for your travel: you can find the TSA wait in real time. The Houston Airports website keeps you updated.

“Just go early. Just go early,” Sondra Mattes said.

Because in the end, the Mattes family knows the holidays are worth the hassle.

“I'm picking up my folks. They’re just coming in to see me, so I’m really excited they’re here," Scott Mattes said.
