Traffic alert: West Loop shutting down at Southwest Freeway this weekend; I-10 East also closed

It's another construction closure on the busy West Loop-Southwest Freeway interchange this weekend. Jennifer Reyna shows how to get around it.

HOUSTON — Heads up, weekend drivers! There’s another major construction closure on the West Loop-Southwest Freeway interchange.

Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, the southbound lanes of the West Loop will close at the Southwest Freeway. They’re scheduled to stay closed until Monday morning at 5 a.m.

So how do you get around the closure?

If you’re on West Loop heading southbound, take the 59 Southbound ramp, exit at Fountain View and make a U-Turn. Drivers heading northbound from Bellaire, take the ramp to 59 northbound, exit at Weslayan and U-Turn, then take the next entrance ramp onto the Southwest Freeway and take that until you get to Fountain View.  Take the Fountain View exit, U-turn and get on the northbound lanes of the Southwest Freeway. From there, you can get on the 610 West Loop southbound.

On the east side of town, I-10 will be closed between Mercury and the East Loop from 10 p.m. Friday until 4 a.m. Monday. The westbound entrance ramps to Mercury and Holland/John Ralston will also be closed.

To get around the closure, I-10 traffic westbound will be detoured to 610 North to Wallisville Road, where drivers will take the exit and U-turn onto 610 southbound.  From the southbound frontage road, drivers will get back on the main lanes of 610 southbound and head to the I-10 westbound lanes.

Three inbound lanes of the Gulf Freeway northbound between Broadway and 610 will be shut down daily between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. until July 17.

You'll want to avoid these trouble spots if your commute takes you into this area.
