Large spools roll off truck on East Freeway causing backup for hours

The huge spools rolled off a truck traveling westbound on the east freeway on Monday. Thankfully, no one was injured in the accident.

HOUSTON - Two large spools rolled off a truck on the East Freeway on Monday causing a major traffic backup, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

The accident happened around 4:30 p.m. on I-10 westbound near the Wayside exit.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the spools weighed 18,000 lbs. each and were sitting on the interstate after they fell off a truck.

Two mainlanes were blocked for a few hours as crews worked to remove the spools.

At 8:12 p.m., Sheriff Gonzalez tweeted all lanes on the interstate were open.

He also thanked his deputies, Houston Police, METRO Houston officers, and TxDOT officials who helped in the investigation and in removing the spools.

There is no word on what may have led to the accident. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
