A weekend closure at a major interchange could cause a traffic headache for those heading to the World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest.

HOUSTON — A weekend closure at a major interchange ended ahead of schedule on Sunday, the Texas Department of Transportation announced.

All the main lanes on I-610 West Loop and I-69 Southwest Freeway at the interchange have reopened after construction wrapped up early, according to TxDOT. The closures were initially scheduled to last until 5 a.m. on Monday.

Danny Perez with TxDOT said the construction on the project had already been put on hold for several holidays and events like the College Football Playoff Championship. He added that a substantial amount of the roadwork will be completed by the fall of 2024.

TxDOT said the I-69/I-610 interchange is a $259 million project that aims to enhance safety and improve mobility by widening the connector ramps of the two freeways to two lanes, increasing sight distances, and providing remedies to eliminate weaving.
