USPS Postmaster General speaks at Senate hearing on postal service operations

In a Senate hearing Tuesday, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy will likely be asked to explain the changes within USPS that led to widespread mail delays in Houston.

WASHINGTON D.C., DC — In a Senate hearing Tuesday, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy is answering questions from the nation’s top lawmakers about the postal service and its operations.

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee convened the oversight hearing.

The postmaster general admitted service has gotten worse in places like Houston, because of operational changes. However, he said those would become nationwide issues if the postal service doesn’t modernize the network.

Right now, Dejoy is one of four postal service officials answering questions from senators. They’re talking about changes to the USPS network and the impact on mail delivery.

Tuesday’s hearing comes less than a week after the USPS Office of Inspector General released a 17-page audit on the South Houston Local Processing Center in Missouri City.

When inspectors visited the facility in January, they discovered 384,000 pieces of delayed mail.

At the facility, inspectors uncovered major issues with mail processing machines, staffing and facility conditions according to the audit. They also found that USPS did not communicate effectively with all stakeholders including the media about the changes that were planned for Houston’s mail processing network.
