Election Day updates: Results coming into election central

Out of 211,000 ballots cast in person and by mail ballot during early voting in Harris County, over 102,000 voters voted democrat and over 109,000 voted republican.

HOUSTON — Texas voters headed to the polls today to cast ballots in several important primaries that will shape national, state, and local politics.

Super Tuesday is the biggest day of this year's primary campaign as 15 states, including Texas, along with American Samoa, are voting. The race at the top of the ballot is for president of the United States.

11 P.M.- As of 11 p.m., these are the votes in for big local races:

  • Sean Teare (D)- 80,616 / Kim Ogg (D)- 22,581
  • Sheila Jackson Lee (D)- 14,796 / Amanda Edwards (D)- 8,483

10:30 P.M. - AP calls race for Allred. He will face incumbent Cruz in November.

10 P.M.- Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth said with 46 voting centers reporting, 222,773 people have voted in the joint primary election. Over 108,000 of those voters were democrats and over 114,000 were republicans. As of 10 p.m., more than 200 voting centers were closing down and the remaining 345 were preparing to securely transport election-related materials to the six rally sites across the county.

10 P.M.- As of 10 p.m., these are the votes in for big local, statewide races:

  • Sean Teare (D)- 77,486 / Kim Ogg (D)- 21,472
  • Sheila Jackson Lee (D)- 14,251 / Amanda Edwards (D)- 8,176

9:45 P.M.- Roland Gutierrez concedes. 

9 P.M.- As of 9 p.m., these are the votes in for big local, statewide races:

8 P.M.- As of 8 p.m., these are the votes in for big local, statewide races:

7:30 P.M. - Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth said unofficial numbers for early voting in-person and by mail are as follows: 

  • Over 102,000 voted democrat
  • Over 109,000 voted republican

7 P.M. - Polls closed but anyone in line by 7 p.m. is still allowed to vote. Early voting results are expected soon. 

6:10 P.M. - By 6 p.m., 141,000 voters had cast Election Day ballots in Harris County, the clerk's office reported.

5:25 P.M. - Once the polls close and every vote has been processed, election judges from all 545 vote centers will drop them off at one of six rally sites around the county. 

They'll then be transmitted to Election Central which will count the votes and report results as they come in.

5:05 P.M. - With two hours left until the polls close, 120,000 people in Harris County had cast Election Day ballots, according to the county clerk's office.

4:35 P.M. - As of 3:30 p.m., 95,000 voters had cast Election Day ballots in Harris County, according to the clerk's office.

3:50 P.M. - An error by an election judge in Houston briefly led to a candidate disappearing from his own ballot. 

Texas State Rep. Jarvis Johnson is a Democrat running for the state Senate but he couldn't find his name on his ballot when he went to vote Tuesday. Neither could the two family members who were with him.

“It was funny because I couldn’t even vote for my own self,” Johnson said.

Turns out an election judge had scanned the wrong precinct code, bringing up the incorrect ballot for Johnson and the others, Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth said.

2:50 P.M. - Another 211,000 votes were cast in person or by mail during the early voting period, Harris County election officials said Tuesday. About 80% voted in person and 20% by mail. Those totals included two astronauts aboard the International Space Station. 

2 P.M. - Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth said over 70,000 voters had cast Election Day ballots countywide as of 2 p.m.  She said they've received over 800 calls from election workers about equipment or procedural issues. 

12:30 PM - The Harris County Clerk's Office said it has recorded more than 56,000 total votes cast in person on Election Day.

11 AM - Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth said that 545 voting centers opened this morning across the county. She added that as of 10 a.m., 26,000 voters cast their ballot in person this morning.

The county clerk said 98% of the voting centers opened on time this morning. 

"We rely on our dedicated election workers to carry out their important statutory duties," she said. "Nevertheless, we always prepare for small challenges on Election Day. Election judges that are new, election judges that are nervous and may have challenges setting up equipment, facility managers, not opening the building on time to allow voters in and building, I'm sorry, voters or election workers in and building power issues that have been resolved."

The county clerks said preparations included assigning technicians to every single vote center. They also kept additional staff and equipment on standby, using technology like ServiceNow to log calls and direct concerns to appropriate teams for the fastest response time.

As of 9:30 a.m., 480 calls have gone to their helpdesk.

10:30 AM - Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth gave an update on polling so far for Election Day and the incident involving DA Kim Ogg.

9:57 AM - The Harris County Clerk's Office issued a statement after it appeared District Attorney Kim Ogg had an issue with someone already casting a ballot in her name. The statement said Ogg's partner cast a ballot in her name.
