HOUSTON -- It was a sight that had drivers pulling over left and right.

Two giant spools spilled onto the road and one was lodged in the underpass of Beltway 8 at Aldine-Westfield Road.

Billy Vest is a truck driver himself and couldn't believe his eyes.

This right here is absolutely mind boggling, Vest said. You see how high that is -- anybody with common sense knows you can't go anywhere like that.

The driver of the rig works for a company called C&D Diversified out of Waller and admits he made a mistake. With his police escorts, he went off the assigned route because he said he was running late.

Charlie White stopped to take pictures too.

I was coming back from the airport and I saw all this stuff, White said. Look at this crap, what was this dude thinking.

TXDOT says the repairs will be done by an emergency crew, but the far right lane of Beltway 8 over Aldine-Westfield will be closed during repairs that could take two to three months.

No word on the cost of the mistake, but the driver told KHOU 11 News that he got two tickets from Houston Police.
