Vehicle fire Monday night

SPRING, Texas - It was the ultimate act of friendship. On Monday night a soccer player risked his life to pull a teammate from a burning car, possibly saving him.

Bruno Gavela and his teammate, 19-year old Franco Leyva, had just wrapped up a game at an indoor field in Spring.

They were each driving home just after ten, when Gavela saw Leyva lose control.

The roads were slick. As Leyva spun out, his car plowed into a pole and ignited a small fire near his gas tank.

Seeing that his friend was disoriented, Gavela moved in quickly.

"I got out of the car and just tried to get to him," Bruno Gavela said. "And then I saw the flames, time to hurry up, and just take him out of the car."

He did so just in time because there was soon a loud explosion.

"The fire went so fast that the whole car exploded," Gavela said. "The sound was so loud."

But the friends were safe. Neither one of them were burned, although Leyva hit his head.

Tonight he is still in the hospital surrounded by his teammates and their newest MVP.

"It was crazy," teammate Pedro Ortega said. "I guess it was just that bond we had that made him go in that car and pull him out."

All of them are eager to soon see both of their friends back on the soccer field soon.
