Family gathers to remember life of their loved one 2 years after he was shot, killed by Houston police officer

A Harris County grand jury declined to charge the officer who shot and killed Jalen Randle in 2022.

HOUSTON — Family members gathered Sunday to remember the life of a loved one two years after he was shot and killed by a Houston police officer.

Jalen Randle was shot and killed in April 2022 by HPD Officer Shane Privette as officers were trying to arrest him on three felony warrants.

A Harris County grand jury declined to charge Officer Privette.

This was the second time the case had been considered by a grand jury. In April 2023, the grand jury decided to take no action against Privette, sending it to another grand jury.

Sunday marked the second anniversary of Randle's death. His family held a memorial near his grave at Brookside Cemetery.

"We are here today to celebrate my son's death date and I should be at home cooking dinner for my family instead of being out here with my son in a grave," Tiffany Rachal, Randle's mother, said.

Rachel said she will continue to fight for justice for her son.

"We don't want monetary. We want action. We want accountability and we want it now," she said.

What happened

On April 27, 2022, the Houston Police Department's Narcotics Tactical Team was looking for Randle, who was wanted on three felony warrants. Randle got into the passenger seat of a car and the driver refused to stop for police. After a short pursuit, Randle got out of the car.

Body cam video shows HPD officer Shane Privette command Randle to show his hands. He then opened fire as the last words left his mouth. About two seconds after Randle got out of the car, he was shot in the neck and killed.

A gun was later found in the bag Randle was holding when he was shot.

The video may be disturbing to watch and contains violent scenes. You can view the videos on the HPD YouTube page.

The driver of the car, E.J. Robertson, was charged with misdemeanor fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer. His case was dismissed.
