WALLER COUNTY, Texas — Officials said an inmate attempted suicide Friday morning at the Waller County Jail.

The Waller County District Attorney’s Office found the inmate early Friday morning and rushed him to a Houston hospital. They said he is being treated for his injuries.

The FBI and Texas Rangers are leading the investigation into the suicide attempt.

The jail is the same one where, in 2015, Sandra Bland was reportedly found hanging in her cell three days after she was arrested for allegedly assaulting an officer during a traffic stop.

In 2017, Commissioners Court unanimously decided to ask Sheriff Glenn Smith for his resignation. They said the sheriff has mismanaged the Waller County Jail, pointing to a string of controversies at the facility starting with Bland's suicide, then multiple guns were stolen from the sheriff at a nearby restaurant.

Officials said there is no evidence indicating any procedures or guidelines were not followed by staff in the inmate’s suicide attempt Friday.
