Waller Co. Sheriff refuses to resign

Waller County Sheriff Glenn Smith is speaking out after the County Judge and District Attorney asked him to resign on behalf of Commissioners Court.

WALLER COUNTY, Texas -- Waller County Sheriff Glenn Smith is speaking out after the County Judge and District Attorney asked him to resign on behalf of Commissioners Court.

"Five people didn't elect me to this position, and five people are not going to take it from me," Smith said.

Commissioners Court unanimously decided to ask the sheriff for his resignation. They say the sheriff has mismanaged the Waller County Jail. They point to a string of controversies at the facility starting with Sandra Bland's suicide, then multiple guns were stolen from the sheriff at a nearby restaurant.

Now this week there's an ongoing sex assault investigation of a female inmate, and even issues controlling Victor Kevin Tome, the man accused of running over and killing two cyclists last weekend.

"I could understand the frustration and aggravation, but I've got a job to do, and I'm going to do it," Smith said.

The sheriff says he's making changes at the jail. He's fired three people, two others resigned, and he's hired a new jail administrator. These changes for now seem to have appeased the man who asked the sheriff to resign just a few days ago.

"I'm not asking the sheriff to resign at this point. I'm going to wait and see if these changes come about that he's promised," said District Attorney Elton Mathis.

Commissioners say their minds have not changed and the sheriff needs to resign, but the top law enforcement officer in Waller County isn't budging.

"I'm not going to cut tail and run," Smith said.
