La Marque woman dies of gunshot wound after domestic disturbance

A woman was shot dead late Tuesday during a struggle over a handgun, authorities said Wednesday.

LA MARQUE A woman was shot dead late Tuesday during a struggle over a handgun, authorities said Wednesday.

Monique Powell, 26, of La Marque, was shot in the chest and pronounced dead after arriving at Mainland Medical Center after an incident just before midnight Tuesday, La Marque police Detective Danielle Herman said in a statement.

Powell was involved in a disturbance in an apartment in the 1600 block of Main Street that she shared with Kenneth Loftis, 24, Herman said.

Loftis was charge with tampering with physical evidence and jailed on $150,000 bond, Herman said.

Police said the incident stemmed from a domestic disturbance but gave no further details.

A handgun was produced, and a struggle reportedly ensued, Herman said. The initial investigation indicates that the victim was shot once in the chest during the struggle.

Emergency first responders called a medical helicopter, and an ambulance crew took Powell to Mainland Medical Center in Texas City.

The Galveston County Medical Examiner s Office performed an autopsy and ruled Powell s death a homicide, a spokesman for the office said Wednesday.

The investigation into the shooting continues and could result in more charges, Herman said.
