'Fractions of a second': Bullets hit car on I-45, barely miss children inside

One bullet went clean through both rear windows. Another lodged in the metal about a foot back. The bullets straddled where her daughter, 12, and son, 8, were sitting.

PEARLAND, Texas — A Pearland mom says she was fractions of a second from losing two of her children after a gunman fired into her moving vehicle in southeast Houston.

It happened at 12:15 a.m. Monday after she took the Dixie Farm Road exit off I-45 North.

Although the woman is pretty sure she was just at the wrong place at the wrong time, she asked to only be identified as Kelly.

“I didn’t see anybody, anything, just the sounds,” Kelly said, explaining the gunshots. “There were three just right in a row.”

Kelly’s car was hit twice. One bullet went clean through both rear windows. Another lodged in the metal about a foot back. The bullets straddled where her daughter, 12, and son, 8, were sitting.

“That’s exactly where my kid’s heads were. So by inches, they would’ve both been gone. Fractions of a second. So if we left a little bit earlier or a little bit later," she said. “So that was what was most terrifying, the sounds. And then immediately looking back and seeing that hole and having no doubt what had happened.”

Once Kelly made sure her kids were OK, she pulled over at a nearby gas station and called police.

“Every consequence that can happen, I want that to happen to whoever did this because they almost took my kids from me," Kelly said.

Approximately two hours later, two men were arrested nearby after investigators say they were caught firing a gun out of a vehicle on I-45.

Investigators say the men also had a backpack full of marijuana. At this point, police can’t say if the shootings are connected. Their names haven’t been released.
