HISD says nearly half its schools would receive 'D' or 'F' grade under the state's new accountability ratings

Individual school ratings haven't been released but the data will be used to decide which schools will be part of the New Education System next school year.

HOUSTON — The Houston Independent School District said nearly half of the schools in the district would be graded a "D" or "F" under the state's new accountability data.

The Texas Education Agency hasn't released its school ratings yet, but HISD Superintendent Mike Miles said the district did its own analysis of the state's raw data and came up with the ratings themselves.

According to HISD:

  • 35 schools would be rated "A"
  • 58 schools would be rated "B"
  • 64 schools would be rated "C"
  • 59 schools would be rated "D"
  • 52 schools would be rated "F"

"TEA is making the school ratings system more rigorous," Miles said. "This is a necessary and important shift if we want to ensure schools are preparing all students to compete and succeed in our global, rapidly evolving workplace and world. In HISD, we understand the future of our students is at stake, and know we need a true picture of how they are doing. That’s what the state’s updated accountability system provides."

The TEA said they haven't verified HISD's analysis and haven't released their official ratings yet due to ongoing litigation.

Miles said he's not going to release the ratings for individual schools yet but said the data will be used to make decisions about which schools will be added to the New Education System for the next school year. Those decisions will be announced in the coming weeks.

The accountability data includes 2022-2023 STAAR scores, TELPAS scores, which are the results of a test of English language proficiency, 2022 graduation rates and 2022 college, career, and military readiness rates.
