SWAT standoff ends with suspect in custody after he allegedly shot his wife, police say

Officers said the four children in the home are safe.

HOUSTON — An hourslong SWAT scene at a southside Houston home Saturday night ended with a suspect in custody, and the four children inside were unharmed.

Houston Police Department’s SWAT & Negotiations Team responded to a home in the 6300 block of Belmark Street near Mykawa Road. They said the suspect barricaded himself with the children inside after allegedly shooting his wife in the leg over an argument about beer.

Police said the children, ages 2 to early teens, were kept in the house by the suspect. SWAT and negotiators then worked for four hours to get the suspect to surrender.

Police say they responded to another incident with the suspect at the home in 2017. Neighbors told KHOU 11 they lived in fear for their safety.

“He done this a couple years ago. I mean, he always traumatized our neighborhood," neighbor Justin Royal said.

The woman was transported to a hospital, police said. The suspect is charged with aggravated assault on a family member.
