Man who opened fire on officers through apartment door near downtown Houston killed, HPD says

Houston police said they were responding to an assault in progress call when officers got into a shootout with the suspect.

HOUSTON — A man was killed Friday after getting into a shootout with Houston Police Department officers at an apartment complex near downtown Houston.

This happened just before 6 p.m. at The Exchange apartment complex along Leona Street, which is just north of I-10 between North Main Street and Elysian Street.

HPD said its officers responded to an assault in progress call at a unit in the complex and when they knocked on the door and rang the doorbell the suspect opened the door and immediately opened fire on them. The officers returned fire, shooting the suspect, HPD said.

The officers took cover and called for backup. When they entered the apartment, they found the suspect dead. They also found a woman who was not injured.

Fortunately, those responding officers were not injured, according to officials.

Two guns were found inside the apartment unit.
