HOUSTON — A Houston woman was sentenced to 30 years in prison Thursday for stabbing her own mother to death in 2021.

In August 2021, Ericka Nicole McDonald -- who was wearing a mask and black clothes -- broke into her mother's apartment through a window and stabbed her to death. She then left, changed clothes and returned to the scene within minutes and pretended that she didn't know what happened, the Harris County District Attorney's Office said.

McDonald was arrested after an eyewitness identified her as the intruder.

McDonald's mother was identified as Terri Mendoza, 51.

McDonald pleaded guilty to the murder and as part of her plea deal, she cannot appeal the conviction or the punishment and must serve at least half of the prison sentence before she will be eligible for parole.

“This is a tragic case and should not have happened, but prosecutors with our Homicide Division were able to get justice for the victim,” said Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg.
