Bond raised for man accused of killing convicted sex offender

James Lewis Spencer III, 24, went before a Harris County judge Thursday morning who set his bond at $250,000.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A 24-year-old Alvin man accused of shooting and killing a convicted sex offender in Houston was back in court Monday morning.

James Lewis Spencer III, 24, is charged with murder in the May 2023 shooting death of Sean Connery Showers, 37. The victim's body was found in a ditch near the Heights with multiple gunshot wounds.

A judge raised Spencer's bond from $250,000 to $350,000.

According to court records, Spencer told a witness that he knew how to track sex offenders via an app on his phone and that he wanted to rob and hurt them.

A month later, he told her, "If the cops were not going to do anything maybe he should kill them himself," according to court documents.

Investigators said Spencer was posing as a minor when he contacted Showers and they discussed Showers' sexual history with minors before agreeing to meet up.

Phone records tracked Spencer traveling to and from where Showers was shot and killed, according to Houston police.

"No one gets to be judge, jury or executioner based on how they feel regardless of the likeability of the victim," the prosecutor said Monday. "We have to follow the rules. Otherwise, society doesn't function."

Some of Spencer's bond conditions include 24-hour house arrest, GPS monitoring, and having no access to firearms, ammunition, or weapons.
