Man accused of shooting, killing man who allegedly stole his car makes first court appearance

In probable cause court, Dushawn Caples' public defender said this case is "going to be a self-defense issue."

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A man accused of shooting and killing a man who allegedly stole his car made his first court appearance Sunday.

The incident happened Saturday, March 9 shortly before 4 a.m. on Golden Eagle Drive, which is near Beltway 8 and Mesa Drive.

Investigators said Dushawn Caples woke up that morning and realized someone was stealing his car from his apartment complex in Humble. He then jumped into his wife's SUV and chased after the alleged thieves, according to investigators.

One of the alleged thieves was later found dead with gunshot wounds after he crashed into a parked car.

In probable cause court, Caples' public defender said Caples tried to flag down the driver.

"Noticed the complainant reaching around within the vehicle, obviously was concerned that he appeared to be reaching for a weapon. The complainant wasn't the only one in the vehicle. There was a second gentleman as well who fled the scene after the shots were fired. Obviously, going to be a self-defense issue," they said.

It was revealed in court that Caples is an Army veteran who served from 2016 until he was honorably discharged in 2023.

Caples is being held on a $100,000 bond.
