HPD: 2-year-old shot while playing in front of his home near downtown Houston

Houston police are asking for the public's help with identifying the people responsible.

HOUSTON — A 2-year-old boy was shot Friday while playing in front of his home in Houston's Fourth Ward, police said.

This happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Gillette Street and Ruthven Street

Houston Police Executive Assistant Chief Larry Satterwhite said numerous people were outside of their homes on Gillette Street, enjoying the evening, when at least four vehicles passed by and shots were fired as the vehicles crossed Ruthven Street. The 2-year-old boy was playing outside when he was shot twice, Satterwhite said.

The boy's family quickly put him in a vehicle and took him to the hospital before police and firefighters arrived on scene. Satterwhite said he was shot in the torso and arm. As of Friday night, he was stable but Satterwhite asked for prayers.

Satterwhite said there were possibly two shooters involved because shell casings from a rifle and a handgun were found on the scene. As many as 30 to 40 shots were fired, Satterwhite said.

Investigators are trying to determine if the shots were meant for someone standing outside their home or if the vehicles that passed by were shooting at each other. Satterwhite said the four vehicles were described as:

  • Four-door black truck that's lifted with a potential light bar
  • Four-door black sedan
  • Silver Nissan or similar vehicle
  • Champagne-colored car, though police are unsure if this car was involved

Houston police are asking anyone who may know anything about this shooting or anyone who can give them more details about the vehicles that passed by to call 713-308--8800. You can also call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477 if you want to remain anonymous.
