WATCH | Houston Crime Stoppers join conference bringing awareness to rising rental scams

Officials will present a digital billboard to launch a campaign against rental scams. They say more Houstonians are becoming victims

STAFFORD, Texas — The CEO for Crime Stoppers of Houston is joining other officials to speak out against the rise of rental scams in the Greater Houston area.

CEO Raina Makarious will speak alongside representatives from Clear Channel Outdoor, the Houston Associations of Realtors and authorities from Staffard. The group will unveil a digital billboard to bring awareness to the scam.

According to those representatives, 5.2 million U.S. renters have lost millions of dollars due to rental fraud. They also say more Houstonians have become victims of fraud.

The scams include fake online advertisements showing largely discounted prices. Victims would usually send payments to the scammers and never hear from them again.

A local couple will speak their experiences as victims of a rental property scam.
