New Buc-ee's could be coming to San Marcos

The proposed 74,000-square-foot Buc-ee's would have 120 gasoline fueling positions and the capacity to have 100 to 175 electric vehicle charging stations.

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Buc-ee's could be coming to San Marcos! On Tuesday night, the San Marcos City Council gave preliminary approval for a tax incentive for the mega travel center chain.

The proposed 74,000-square-foot Buc-ee's in San Marcos would have 120 gasoline fueling positions and the capacity to have 100 to 175 electric vehicle charging stations. It would be located on 22 acres off Interstate 35 southbound near Yarrington Road and would bring 175 full-time jobs to the city, with an average wage of $43,855 and benefits.

According to the council documents, the Lake Jackson-based company would have to invest at least $50 million into the site.

There's already a Buc-ee's in New Braunfels, about 20 miles south of San Marcos, and one in Luling. The Luling location is currently undergoing an expansion to become the “world’s largest convenience store.”

The tax incentive would provide Buc-ee’s with a 15-year, 50% sales tax rebate from the city of San Marcos as well as Hays County. The city and county would retain 100% of property taxes from the location.

The site would generate around $5.9 million in property taxes and $3.2 million in sales taxes over 15 years for the city, the documents say. The county would retain around $2.8 million in property taxes and $1 million in sales taxes. The deal would generate around $11.4 million for Hays CISD, according to estimates.

Buc-ee’s would be required to submit construction permits by June 1 and start construction by March 31, 2025.
