HOUSTON — A staple of Rice Village will be closing its doors after 40 years, the owners announced.

In a post on their Facebook page, the owners of Prego, described as a "contemporary Italian trattoria," said they paused their plans to relocate from Amherst to Kelvin. They will now remain open at their original location through Mother’s Day.

“Despite our best efforts and Rice Real Estate Company’s generous accommodations, we have decided that it is not the right time for Prego to make such a move. We appreciate the long-standing relationship with Rice and their partnership in helping us come to this decision,” the owners said in their post. “We are excited about the future of Rice Village and continue to be steadfast in our commitment to this community.”

Prego said they will be hosting several wine dinners leading up to their closing on May 31.

They invited patrons to come raid their cellar, enjoy a family dinner and to host a celebration in the wine room.

“We look forward to celebrating with you all!”
