SE Texas is under an increased heat risk | Here's what that means

Very humid air coupled with warm temperatures is making for a stretch of heat that's dangerous to be in for prolonged periods of time.

HOUSTON — Very humid air coupled with warm temperatures is making for a stretch of heat that's dangerous to be in for prolonged periods of time. While our temps are only in the upper 80s to low 90s the Heat Index--how it feels on our skin is well into the triple digits. This is especially concerning if you're in a household that's still without power.

Not only hot afternoons but very warm evenings too. Typically we'd get some relief from the heat during the overnight hours but given humidity is staying high--our temps are only falling to around 80.

The prolonged heat exposure, hot afternoons and very warm evenings, is prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Heat Risk forecast for the area.

With a Moderate to Major risk to see heat related illness in the area it's important you pay attention to your body and react accordingly. Are you sweating excessively and feeling dizzy? Go to a cool space, re-hydrate, take a cold shower. Any symptoms like a throbbing headache, lack of sweating (your body no longer working to cool itself off) would require immediate medical attention.

Going into Memorial Day Weekend the heat risk only gets worse as temperatures climb into the mid 90s and the Heat Index could get all the way up to 110. Say ahead of hydration, seek the shade and take breaks from the heat in air conditioned spaces.
