Tropical Storm Eta strengthens in Caribbean

With Eta, the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season has tied 2005 as the year with the most named storms.

HOUSTON — Tropical Strom Eta continues to move to the west in the Caribbean and is expected to strengthen, according to the National Hurricane Center.  When Eta was named on Saturday, it marked the deepest we’ve gotten into the Greek alphabet for named storms in the Atlantic Hurricane Season.

The system is expected to strengthen into a hurricane as it approaches the coast of Central America late Monday into Monday night.

Hurricane watches have been issued in the area. Those could become warnings by Sunday

As of Sunday morning, the storm had 40 mile per hour winds with gusts up to 50. It was moving to the west at 15 miles per hour..

It’s centered 215 miles south of Kingston, Jamaica. The system is forecast to bring up to 15 inches of rain to parts of the Caribbean and isolated totals of 30 inches to parts of Honduras and Nicaragua. Eta is expected to intensify into a hurricane by Monday. Forecasters say the system will be near the northeastern coasts of Nicaragua and Honduras by Tuesday morning.

Hurricane season runs through the end of November. Download the KHOU news app to track Tropical Storm Eta's path.

Even though this is the first time the National Hurricane Center has gotten up to Eta in the Atlantic season, the storm ties us for the most active season on record.  According to the National Weather Service there was a storm that was discovered after the 2005 season ended. In 2005, the season ended with Zeta.
