Should Texans attempt to trade for OT Ereck Flowers?

The Houston Texans are still in dire need of offensive tackle help. As the team does not currently have any draft picks until the third round, being able to acquire some potential help before the draft is an appealing idea.

The New York Giants might be in a position to help. Per numerous reports, the Giants are prepared to move on from Ereck Flowers.

Should the Texans be interested?

Flowers has been a major disappointment in New York since being a first-round pick in 2015. He was an instant starter at left tackle but has struggled. As Ian Rapoport notes in the above tweet report, a fresh start might do him well.

He has three years of starting experience but has shown precious little improvement since his college days at Miami. While Flowers is a good athlete, he lacks football polish and coordination in movement. In watching some of his handiwork from last season, Flowers would represent a downgrade from what the Texans had in Chris Clark at left tackle at the end of 2017. He’s been that bad in New York.

The change of coaching philosophy and removing the weight of the lofty draft expectations couldn’t hurt. Flowers is still just 23 and has not lost any of the athletic traits that made him so highly coveted in the ’15 draft. And the Texans are indeed desperate for help with Clark gone in free agency, leaving just unproven Julie’n Davenport and unimpressive Kendall Lamm as in-house options.

If the Giants are willing to accept one of the Texans’ late sixth-round picks, it’s worth the trade. A draft bust of even bigger proportions, Greg Robinson, brought the Rams back a sixth-round pick in a similar move last offseason. That move failed for the Detroit Lions, who found out the changes didn’t help much. Anything higher than one of the Texans two picks at the end of the 6th is too much to give up.
