HOUSTON — There were three quarterbacks at practice for the Texans on Wednesday, none of whom were named CJ Stroud.

On Tuesday, we reported the team would be adding quarterback Tim Boyle to the squad for depth in case Stroud couldn’t go against Cleveland Sunday. On Wednesday they made it official, announcing they've signed the former Jets QB to the practice squad. Shortly after, Boyle was working out with last week’s starting quarterback Case Keenum and Davis Mills, who has been Stroud’s backup all season.

Meanwhile, Stroud remains in the concussion protocol after a hit he took in the Dec. 10 game against the Jets. So far, head coach DeMeco Ryans hasn’t named a starting quarterback for Sunday if Stroud isn’t cleared in time to play. Keenum led the team to a road win over Tennessee last Sunday, the first game Stroud missed with a concussion.

Ryans addressed Stroud's condition Wednesday, saying he's improving, but still isn't ready to go yet.

"We're going through the protocol," he said. "Each concussion is different. Each person takes a different amount of time ."

Ryans stressed the most important thing is Stroud's health.

"When he's ready to go, he's ready to go and I'll let you guys know," he said.

Houston is now 8-6 and tied for first place in the AFC South with Jacksonville and Indianapolis. Cleveland comes in 9-5, second in the AFC North behind Baltimore.

Boyle, who played his college ball at Eastern Kentucky, has played for four teams in his five-year NFL career. He’s seen action in 20 games since coming into the league. Boyle was released by the Jets after two starts this season.
