HOUSTON — The New Orleans Pelicans are on the brink of elimination after the Oklahoma City Thunder blew them out, 106-85, Saturday to take a 3-0 lead in their playoff series.
So what does that have to do with Galveston? Absolutely nothing…unless you’re Charles Barkley.
It’s become a catchphrase on TNT for the analysts to say that a team that gets eliminated will be off to Cancun for vacation. But Barkley was apparently so disgusted with the way New Orleans played Saturday night that he didn’t even think the squad from New Orleans deserved a vacation to the popular Mexican resort destination.
That was apparent when co-host Shaquille O’Neal asked him where the Pelicans should go once they're knocked out.
“We’re not even going to send them to Cancun,” Barkley quipped. “We’re going to send them to Galveston, where that dirty a—water be washing up on the shore and you people think you’re at the beach.”
And Barkley, who played four seasons as a Rocket just an hour north of the town he just slammed, said the team shouldn’t even be flown there.
“They need to drive, man,” he continued with his co-hosts cracking up on the desk. “We aren’t giving them no plane ticket to the beach.”
VisitGalveston.com got wind of Barkley's comments and responded with a post on Facebook.
In a post, they said, "Charles Barkley, here I was thinking we were cool, and then you go throwing shade like we’re strangers. What’s up with that?"
