CYPRESS, Texas- Mack Beggs, a transgender teen who identifies as male, won the Texas girls state wrestling title on Saturday.
Beggs, 17, attends Euless Trinity High School in the Dallas area. He defeated Chelsea Sanchez of Katy Morton Ranch High School in the Class 6A Girls Championship wrestling match for the 110 pound division.
Although born a girl, Beggs has been taking testosterone to transition to a boy. He wanted to compete against boys, but state rules wouldn't allow it.
"It's a lot, but he did it," said Nancy Beggs, his grandmother. "He's a trooper and he said he's going to change the world."
There was a mixture of cheers and boos when he was declared the winner, but Beggs credited the win to his team.
"We trained hard every single day and that is where the spotlight should've been on," said Beggs. "Not me, all these guys, because I would not be here without them."
One family has filed a lawsuit saying that his use of testosterone puts others athletes at risk and others also claim it gives him an advantage.
The University Interscholastic League passed a rule overwhelmingly in early 2016 that dictates athletes must compete based on the gender listed on their birth certificate.
