AUSTIN, Texas — It's official. Austin Independent School District is making Election Day a student holiday.
The Austin ISD board voted late Sept. 28 to change the Oct. 12 student holiday to Nov. 3, Election Day.
The district said the change will not affect the number of instructional days or the daily instructional time for students.
The holiday will decrease the number of people on campuses that may potentially be used as voting sites for the general election.
On Sept. 22, the Eanes ISD board also voted to make Election Day a student and staff holiday, a spokesperson said on Wednesday. The school district said it has three schools serving as polling places, and this will allow it to manage crowds of visitors while adhering to social distancing protocols.
The holiday at Eanes ISD means both staff and students have the day off, without the requirement for staff development activities or for staff to have to make up the day at a later date.
The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 5, and early voting starts Oct. 13 and ends Oct. 30. And, of course, Election Day is Nov. 3.
