TEXAS, USA — Jane Hamilton is a Democratic strategist who’s worked on campaigns for years.
She even helped to run President Joe Biden’s campaign in Texas in 2020.
She says her experience tells her that the relative silence from Congressman Colin Allred’s campaign in his run for U.S. Senate means he’s doing well with funding and resources as Super Tuesday fast approaches.
“Most people would think that they would have heard more on the Democratic side than what we have thus far. I think that speaks to him really having a strong race and running ahead,” Hamilton told us on Inside Texas Politics.
Allred has a significant lead over the Democratic field, including state Senator Roland Gutierrez, who is polling a distance second.
While she thinks Allred will win the primary outright, she thinks the race to replace him in Congressional District 32 will head to a runoff.
Hamilton herself unsuccessfully ran for Congress in 2022, so she knows what it takes.
State Representative Julie Johnson and Dr. Brian Williams are leading a crowded race that sees them both well ahead of the other candidates, at least in terms of fundraising.
And those two are expected to meet in a runoff.
“The numbers that we’ll be looking at is, I’d say, if Julie’s somewhere around 38 and Brian’s somewhere, 32, then that’s a play. If we are watching the numbers and Julie gets to the 40s, not so much,” Hamilton said. “So, the question seems to be really what happens throughout this early voting period and then well into election night.”
