Birds of prey will be on poop patrol during NFL Draft

A real estate company hired the birds and their handlers.

DETROIT — How do you keep the streets of Detroit poop-free for all the visitors heading there for the NFL Draft later this month?

If you guessed birds of prey, you’re right, according to CBS Detroit.

A hawk and a falcon -- along with their handlers -- were hired by a Detroit real estate company to scare away smaller birds that would otherwise likely leave their mark on the Motor City.

Paul Thomas of ScAir Force Falconry said his birds -- Cersei the hawk and Yahtzee the falcon -- can travel between 80 mph and 100 mph and will do their best to keep smaller birds from littering the city with their droppings.

Thomas said bird control is a science.

“It's fun to come in and have to dissect what we have going on,” he said. “We tried different methods of bird control, finding out what works and then finding those combinations of putting together and actually being able to control the birds in the area. It’s kind of a challenge and it’s fun for us.”

The NFL Draft kicks off on Thursday, April 25, and lasts three days. As for the Texans, they don’t have a first-round pick unless they trade up. Their first pick is in the second round, the 42nd overall. They also have picks in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh rounds.
