Buc-ee's is heading to North Carolina, but some folks aren't happy about it

Residents in North Carolina had mixed reactions to the plan for Buc-ee's to open a store in their state.

MEBANE, North Carolina — Buc-ee's is expanding to North Carolina, but not without a bit of controversy.

The City Council in Mebane had a marathon meeting on Monday night. It didn't end until 2 a.m. Tuesday...

Dozens of people showed up to speak -- both for and against the approval of Buc-ee's plan to build a new gas station within their city limits.

"I think it's just going to cause me to be waiting at stoplights more and more. More than I currently do. More than I want to," Edward Mazurek said.

Some people just don't want to see the monstrosity that is Buc-ee's.

"Why does anyone need 120 gas pumps? Seriously ... there's already gas stations along this highway," Lib Hutchby said.

Other Orange County residents said they were for the idea.

"Something is going to go in that spot, whether it be another warehouse or another trucking hub, something is going there so why not bring something that can benefit the citizens of this county," Leslie Prince said.

Others said the entertainment factor was enough for them to support the plan.

"I know people that have children that have specifically asked to go to a Buc-ee's just to go there because they want to see what it's like," Lisa Nellis said.

In the end, council members voted unanimously to approve the new Buc-ee's. It's unclear when construction will begin.
