GALVESTON, Texas - Two people who were riding motorcycles without helmets were killed in two separate accidents on Friday, according to the Galveston Police Department.

Around 6 p.m., several motorcyclists were riding in the 300 block of Seawall Boulevard when the lead biker began braking as he planned to turn right onto East Beach Drive.

One of the bikers following behind him didn't see him braking and hit his bike, officer said. That motorcycle overturned and slid off of the seawall.

The man driving and the woman who was riding with him were thrown from the motorcycle. The 54-year-old woman suffered major head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to GPD.

The man was taken to UTMB for minor injuries.

Police said neither of them were wearing helmets. No charges have been filed at this time.

There is no word on if the other driver, the lead driver of the group, was injured in the accident.

Three and a half hours later, around 9:30 p.m., another motorcycle rider was killed in a crash on the island. Police said the man was driving on 59th and Ave J and lost control of the bike.

The 65-year-old man from League City also suffered serious head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers said he was not wearing a helmet either.

Thousands of bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts were on the island for the Lone Star Rally this weekend. It's the largest motorcycle rally in the country and a reported 500,000 people attend the event every year.
