Toddler found wandering in Spring parking lot

It turns out a relative was watching the boy and said it wasn't the first time the child was able to unlock the door and slip out unnoticed.

SPRING, Texas - An apartment building manager in Spring spotted a toddler walking around the parking lot Thursday without any parents in sight.

The manager called police from the complex in the 4600 block of Cypresswood Drive and watched the child.

Officers went door to door looking for the little boy’s parents, visiting three apartment buildings and two day cares. When they couldn't find his parents, the building manager went through pictures of tenants, and the toddler was able to point to his mom.

It turns out a relative was watching the boy and said it wasn't the first time the child was able to unlock the door and slip out unnoticed.

“With the child’s inquisitive mind, the lower the locks are, the more they learn how to work those,” said Captain Stephen Ener with Harris County Pct. 4.” Have a secondary lock up toward the top, even if it’s just a thumb lock you can slide over. But don’t just rely on the doorknob or the deadbolt, because they know how to open those.”

Officials decided not to charge the relative, but they did call Child Protective Services.
