Houston's Thanksgiving Day Super Feast in desperate need of donations

The summer drought slowed food donations for the "nation’s largest feeding event," the Houston organization said.

HOUSTON — The annual Thanksgiving Day Super Feast in downtown Houston is in need of donations. Organizers said the summer drought affected their ability to “secure food donations essential for this annual event.”

They need 1,500 turkeys more turkeys and more non-perishable foods in order to feed thousands of people, the organizer, City Wide Club said.

"We're anticipating about 30,000 people coming through the door this Thanksgiving Day for a hot meal,” said City Wide Club spokesperson Nicole Lopez. "As you know, food insecurity is a big deal.”

Super Feast is teaming up with Kroger, Chick-fil-A, and Sprouts Famers Market for an emergency Super Turkey Food Drive, which takes place Monday at the George R. Brown Convention Center from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Super Feast is recognized as the nation’s largest feeding event, according to the organization.

“We implore the community to join hands in donating food items crucial to feeding over 25,000 underprivileged individuals, families, senior citizens, and veterans during this holiday season,” the organization said in a statement. “It's a critical moment; failing to meet our donation goals in the coming days could mean many will go without a food basket and hot turkey dinner this Thanksgiving.”

The 45th Thanksgiving Super Feast Walkup and Drive-up gathering will take place on Thursday at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

The Houston Texans were there for the Super Turkey Food Dive Press Rally, Monday at the GRB. Texans cheerleaders and mascot Toro collected food donations.

"I think it’s wonderful because there are a lot of people in need," said Dortha Blair as she dropped off a donation.  "It’s a good thing.”

"We had one individual donor being in 75 turkeys,” Lopez said.

Organizers are confident donations will add up to another successful Super Feast that's judged, in part, by sheer gratitude from those like a mother we met last year.

“I mean, as a single mom of five, it’s very hard," Christina Figueroa told us in 2022.  "Especially when family’s not around. And that's why it means a lot.”

In addition to donations, the City Wide Club is also in need of volunteers.
