New survey finds majority of Texas voters don't support state's extreme abortion ban

A Texas Hispanic Policy Foundation survey asked likely Texas voters for their opinions on abortion, school vouchers and border security.

HOUSTON — The Texas Hispanic Policy Foundation released a brand new poll tracking Texas voters' opinions on key issues like school vouchers and abortion. There were several surprises in the survey.

Right now, abortion is banned in the state of Texas unless the mother's life is at risk. That went into effect after Roe v. Wade was overturned. That law is overwhelmingly unpopular in Texas, according to the survey.

Only 15% of likely Texas voters "prefer abortion be illegal unless the woman's life is at risk." It's extremely unpopular among Republicans, too. Only 26% support the law as it stands now.

Most Texans are somewhere in the middle -- 29% want abortion to be illegal unless the mother's life is at risk or due to rape or incest. Another 29% prefer abortion to be legal through 12 weeks of pregnancy. Dr. Mark Jones said the survey makes it clear the Texas GOP is not where most voters are on this issue.

"Their failure to include an exception for rape or incest is an Achilles heel that puts them at odds with public opinion in Texas," Jones said.

The survey also looked at school vouchers. It's been a legislative priority for Gov. Greg Abbott for years, but the survey showed most voters don't support his position with 57% of likely voters opposing school vouchers for all parents. Only 36% support the policy. The survey did find there is one policy nearly all Texans would like to see happen.

"Texans don't agree on a lot," Jones said. "But they all agree Texas teachers deserve a pay raise -- 90% support it."

The survey also took a look at border security and where Texans stand on who's best handling the border. You can see the full report here.
