BAYTOWN, Texas One burglary suspect was killed and another was listed in critical condition after a teen watching over his grandmother s Baytown home opened fire on them, police said.

The shooting happened in the 800 block of Brentwood Drive, according to the Baytown Police Department.

Burglars broke into the home earlier this month, but this time the teen was ready.

Police said the 18-year-old woke up to the sound of someone breaking into the home around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday. He called 911 and went into the living room with a shotgun to find two men inside.

The teen told police he ordered the two men to put their hands up, but they didn t listen. He shot both men with the shotgun. One collapsed and died at the scene. He was later identified as 40-year-old Charles Allen Dixon.

Theother suspect, identified as 26-year-oldMichael McDaniel, stumbled around and ran away. Helater turned up at the hospital in critical condition, police said.

Detectives have no doubt that this was a case of self-defense.

He was in fear of his life, that s the main thing, said Det. Edgar Elizondo with the Baytown Police Department. Situations like this we will see more often. More Texans arm themselves and we have a right to protect our property.

Baytown police said the teen s grandmother was recently put in a nursing home, and he was living on the property to watch over it.

The teen is a graduate of the Harris County Police Explorers Program, which is a program for kids interested in law enforcement.

The young man s family hasn t commented on the shooting, but neighbors praised his quick actions.

He did good, he did right, he did his job, said Abe Garcia.

Police believe the same burglars broke into another home before they went to Brentwood.
