Spring community at odds over controversial speedbumps throughout neighborhood

For the last two years, speedbumps have lined the streets of the Spring Lakes community. A new administration is looking to change that.

SPRING, Texas — The road to a safer neighborhood is proving to be a rather bumpy one for those living in the Spring Lakes community in Spring.

"We have the risk now with the bumps. What is it going to be like when we remove them? Is it worth the risk?" resident Glenisha Williams said.

Residents said that on any given day, multiple cars are caught speeding or running through stop signs. The dangerous driving has been recorded on cell phone video.

"This is our main street from the main gate, so this street, every house in this neighborhood has to go down (that road)," Williams said.

This is why for the last two years, speedbumps have lined the streets of the Spring Lakes community.

"We put them up when I was on the board as a trial," Michael Guillory said.

But a new HOA board recently voted unanimously to have them removed after conducting a traffic study which they said revealed it's not practical to have speedbumps at stop signs.

The current board also argues that the previous board never consulted a traffic engineer before installing the speedbumps.

The board is considering removing the bumps and installing nine new crosswalks along with three ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps.

"That's not enough, because even with those here, people are going past 30 miles an hour," Lisa Friels said.

It’s a move coming as a surprise to neighbors like Melissa Green, who’s recovering from a traumatic brain injury.

"It was a speeding car that wasn’t paying attention," Green said.

She was hit while biking in Florida two years ago.

"Just trying to protect others so they don’t end up like me," Green said.

The Spring Lakes HOA Board sent KHOU 11 News the following statement:

"The board is working with an expert in traffic engineering to evaluate traffic management in the subdivision, and may consider any advice the expert provides. The Association will rely on the advice of experts in making such determinations."
